Exploring Moldable Exceptions for Java

Abstract

Debuggers traditionally show you a the state of the run-time stack at the point where an exception is raised. However, in many cases it would be more useful to show some more detailed information pertinent to the specific kind of exception raised (an assertion failed, a network error, a parsing error). Moldable exceptions are a lightweight mechanism to adapt a debugger’s interface based on contextual information provided by a raised exception.

An implementation of moldable exceptions can be found in Glamorous Toolkit, a platform supporting a number of moldable development tools, implemented in Smalltalk, a live, object-oriented programming environment. The goal of this seminar project is to explore the implementation of moldable exceptions for Java.
